Breaking the Barriers

Overcoming the Gender Gap in the U.S. Military

Breaking the Barriers

Despite the many barriers that women overcame during the 200+ years, it wasn’t until the last 20 - 30 years that the most significant changes occurred.

A few big changes that have recently occured are:

- Women are first allowed into combat

- Women join the Army's elite 75th Ranger Regiment

- All combat jobs are now open to Women

- The Navy is very close to possibly getting its first female special ops boats crewmam

Important Women from the Military

August 2015

Captains Kristen Griest (right side) and Shaye Haver (middle) become the first women to graduate from Ranger school.

Sherri Gallagher holds 22 United States national rifle records and was named soldier of the year.

Kate Germano became one of the first out of three Lieutenant Colonel in the Marines while completely changing history with the #metoo movement. She is also known for her book about gender bias in the Marines called "Fight like a Girl."

Although there have been many changes from the many years of protesting and patience, women are still not completely equal. But if history is any reflection of what there is to come, then the gender gap should continue to close and hopefully become completely closed at least within the next decade.
